South Normanton Parish Council Christmas Lights Switch On 2018

South Normanton Parish Council Christmas Lights Switch On 2018

For the very first time in South Normanton, the Parish Council decided to provide a Christmas Tree and hold a special event to switch the lights on which took place on Sunday 2nd December at 5pm in the Market Place adjacent to the Cyber Café. Considering the fact that it was raining the event was very well attended and drew a crowd of approximately 200 people of all ages.

Councillor and Alderman Ray Brooks did the light switch on honours which was followed by a firework display which brought a chorus of "Oo's and Aah's" from all the crowd. Hot soup was supplied by the Parish Council free of charge from under the market's fruit and vegetable stall provided by Sean McLaughlin.

There was a special visit from Mickey and Minnie Mouse to the absolute delight of all the children. There was also an opportunity for children and parents to have photographs taken with the popular Disney characters. The local Churches Together group sang Christmas Carols which helped create a lovely festive atmosphere.

Afterwards, Mickey and Minnie Mouse were escorted in a sleigh to the Post Mill Centre. The centre which had been decked out with its own Christmas lights, with this year's decorations being based on a "Strictly Christmas" theme. The Post Mill Centre also provide mulled wine and mince pies for adults and cookies, treats and soft drinks for the children, provided by the Parish Council. Many people stayed on afterwards to spend time with their family, friends and neighbours.

The Christmas lights have been extended to cover more streets this year than previously and really brighten up the village. As this event has proved so popular and successful the intention is to repeat it in future years.
